Welcome to The Crooked Oar, an idea spawned by a few crazy people with a love of whimsy. The name “Crooked Oar” was birthed while sipping cocktails in our backyard many years ago. One day it will be the name of our taco barge on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. Keep following us and you’ll all be invited to the grand opening!
Crooked Oar is a family affair. My daughter Janelle, the instigator, hits the yard sale circuit with me almost every Saturday. She is my #1 fan and the utmost of yard sale partners. My husband, Brad, does all of the repair work and build-outs… once he’s gone through his head- shaking, eye-rolling routine after I pull up to the garage with yet another full truckload of goodies. Then there’s me, Kristy. I love color.
Most people desire a bit of whimsy in their life. Our pieces have allowed many of you the opportunity to add a colorful, original statement to your homes without breaking the bank or committing to a complete room makeover. How fun is that?!?
I was brought up with the understanding that there are no mistakes in art. My present expression of my art is through furniture. I’ve learned that my initial vision is not always what the finished piece ends up to be, and that’s ok! The initial vision of the Crooked Oar was a restaurant or taco barge and has tuned into furniture business during this season of our life. Lesson #1: God has an evolving plan for each of us. It may look very different from what we had envisioned or planned for but, there is a purpose.
I hope that though our art, you may be inspired to find a bit of passion and pizzazz for your everyday world. We’ll be bringing you along on our journey and giving a sneak peek of the projects we’re working on! We’ll also be offering some tips and ideas for transforming your own treasures. Feel free to ask questions and tune in next week for Lesson #2: Ut Oh! Now what?
